V-Drive Components - Stuffing Boxes
The stuffing box prevents sea water from entering the boat's hull. In many small fiberglass boats, for example, the stuffing box is mounted inboard near the point the shaft exits the hull. The "box" is a cylindrical assembly, typically of bronze, comprising a sleeve threaded on one end to accept adjusting and locking nuts. A special purpose heavy-duty rubber hose attaches the stuffing box to a stern tube (called a shaft log), that projects inward from the hull. Marine-duty hose clamps secure the hose to the stern tube and the stuffing box.
A sound stuffing box installation is critical to safety because failure can admit a catastrophic volume of water into the boat.

Cavitation Rod & Prop Shaft Seals
|
|
The Cavitation rod seals are made to fit 1/2" diameter cavation rods. Made from 6061-T6 Alum. They have 2 double lip cup seals with a gap in between them for grease. A snap ring on the front for containment and safety. The water side is an o-ring for a total of 3 water seals.
The Prop Shafts are approximately 2 1/2" diameter by 2 1/2" long. There is a lightly pressed in 2" dia. double sealed bearing with the inside diameter bored to 1.003" (to easily slip over your prop shaft). It's held in the aluminum housing by a snap ring for safety. Also inside the aluminum housing is a double lip cup seal to keep the water out and a grease zert on the outside body to grease the seal. A standard size 1 3/4" hose fits from the rear. Rounded grooves have been added to help the hose clamp bite into the housing and not slip off.

Round Rudder Box
|
|
New design. Made from 6061-T6 Aluminum that is machined finish.
Sealed bearing design (just like the billet prop shaft log seals). No more housings to wear out! The prop shaft rides on the bearing. This new rudder stuffing box has a standard 4 1/16" round mounting flange. So it is a direct replacement for your older style stuffing box. No mounting holes have been drilled, because every hull is different and has a variety of hole sizes and patterns. All you have to do is transfer punch the existing hole locations in your hull to the rudder box and drill the size you need.
Fits all standard 1 1/2" diameter thru hull holes. The 1 1/2" diameter section, that goes thru the bottom of your hull long (1 3/4" long), was left to accommodate any hull thickness. You will have to trim to fit.
Overall height of stuffing box inside the boat is 2 1/8".
- Starting from the top of the stuffing box to the bottom features a snap ring for safety to help retain the 1" sealed bearing that is bored a few thousands larger than your rudder shaft.
- Next is an ample sized grease reservoir which is filled by the grease zert located on the outside of the rudder box housing.
- A double lip grease cup seal is lightly pressed in as a second barrier to keep water out. The first water barrier is a 1/8" diameter o-ring that is below the grease cup seal.
